YMCA Internship & Company Overview

The YMCA of the USA is the national resource office for the nation's YMCAs. Headquartered in Chicago, the YMCA of the USA exists to serve YMCAs. It is staffed by about 300 employees.

Because all communities have different needs, all YMCAs are different; they are autonomous and separate from the YMCA of the USA. They are required by the national constitution to pay annual dues, to refrain from discrimination and to support the YMCA mission. All other decisions are local choices, including programs offered, staffing and style of operation. Each YMCA is an independent organization, autonomous and separate from the YMCA of the USA.

YMCA internships are run on a local level and vary depending on local needs.

Pros:

- I didn't know anything about SEO or html, but I learned a little of both at the internship.
- Actively managed social media accounts which is fun.
- Experience with a CMS.
- Fun events with co-workers.

Cons:

- The customer service side of social media is tough.
- Unpaid, which kind of sucked.

Advice for other students:

Get experience however you can. My YMCA internship was unpaid, but it was still worth it as a resume item.

Pros:

I interned with the Director of Marketing and got a wide range of projects. I loved the wide range of projects because it gave me experience to talk about in future interviews. I worked on social media, media, buying, collateral, branding, and pr. I think the highlight of the internship was the branding and positioning meetings I got to be a part of.

Cons:

- Unpaid.
- Some grunt work.

Advice for other students:

I'd love to get more experience in the branding space and work for an ad agency.
