Pros:

The people are wicked smart. VBP has one of the largest strategy departments on the West Coast, so lots of people to learn from.
Big name clients and always pitching for new biz.

Cons:

Sometimes felt like I was left out of meetings/etc. but that's life as an intern.
Very desk research heavy, would have enjoyed more collaboration or outside the box strategies.
No legit Mexican food near Union Square - and no, Chipotle doesn't count.

Interview Questions & Process:

Had an informational with several strategists and when an opening came along, I met with a couple more people and that was that.

Advice for other students:

Keep asking for more work. Get to know people on different accounts. Try to get in on new biz and agency events/training.

Cons:

There is only one authentic Mexican food spot nearby worth going to

Advice for other students:

You hear it all the time, you get out as much as you put in, but it is especially true here. If you want to cruise by, you can but don't expect to get hired. If you want a challenge, to work on projects well above "internship" level and learn from some bright individuals you can also do that here.

Pros:

I had the opportunity to work on more than one account, which helped me meet many people at the agency. I interned during the summer when agency training sessions took place, so I had the opportunity to learn about the agency and all different aspects of advertising. My supervisors were extremely helping and really made me feel a part of the team and agency.

Cons:

Working on multiple accounts was amazing, but didn't give me a change to really dive deep into one specific account and learn that piece of business. I had more of a topline understanding of each piece of business that I worked on, however, having this experience also provided me with multiple positive learning experience that those working on one account didn't get.

Advice for other students:

This is a great place to work! Work hard, effectively manage expectations with your supervisor and learn as much as you can. And if you are lucky enough you can turn your internship into a full time job!!

Pros:

The internship with Venables Bell and Partners positioned me perfectly toward being qualified to get a full time position in the advertising industry. The account teams are challenging but fair and I couldn't of asked for better people to work with or a more encouraging and supportive work environment.

Cons:

At the time it was an unpaid position, but I believe that it is now a paying program.

Advice for other students:

Come in with a proactive attitude. Expect to do a little of everything and get opportunities to learn communication, project management and teamwork skills.

Try to make yourself available to as many potential opportunities as you can, even if it requires a little overtime. If it's something you're truly interested in and allows you to practice and present your skill set it's worth it.

Pros:

The agency treats all interns as equals. All employees were receptive to questions and encouraged growth. Interns are expected to step in an help out immediately, so nobody holds back on projects/growth opportunities.

Cons:

Was not paid. My direct managers did not have enough time to really help me understand a ton about advertising.

Advice for other students:

Give this place a shot.

Pros:

Hands-on experience; given ownership over creative/strategic projects with real impact on business; working in a team environment; strong agency culture; frequent check-ins and communication with managers and team members; focus struck a balance between skill development, industry exposure, and exploration of personal interest

Cons:

No formal 'training session,' so for complete newbies, things seem a bit overwhelming at first.

Advice for other students:

Excellent for those looking to get their foot in the door of advertising. For this internship, energy and enthusiasm to learn trump prior experience. Demonstrated ability during internship can lead to full-time job offer.
