Pros:

Got to see how a retail company like Urban Outfitters works. I was able to be a part of buyer meetings and work with designers and production specialist. Got some international exposure talking with factory production managers. Did some purchase order management.

Cons:

Unpaid, credit only. Some work was boring and redundant.

Advice for other students:

Try to get into Urban Outfitters HQs for your internship. I think the store internships are pretty bad.

Pros:

- Lots of research on trends and competitors. Kind of interesting, but not too much direction.
- Really enjoyed the people (they took care of me) and the office is very cool.
- Worked a bunch with the web team. I really liked the web strategy and content side of things.

Cons:

- Did some data entry and scanning.
- Wish I had larger projects with more responsibility.
- Unpaid which kind of sucks.

Advice for other students:

Urban Outfitters is a good internship experience. The work can get boring, but you get to see the retail merchandising side of things and a foot in the door.

Pros:

I guess the positive things are that I enjoyed the other intern and store workers. They were fun to hangout with. And, I did learn how a retail store operates.

Cons:

- Unpaid.
- You just work at the store and get bossed around.
- No strategy, no real thinking.

Advice for other students:

Avoid these internships. I know they sound cool, but they're worthless unless you really need a resume item. Urban Outfitters HQs might be completely different.

Pros:

- Discount at Urban Outfitters.
- You can get to be creative.

Cons:

- You basically decorate the store. If you enjoy this, it could be fun for you. But, you also have to get academic credit for the internship instead of being paid.

Advice for other students:

It's really a toss up depending on how desperate you are for an internship in the industry. I was pretty desperate.

Pros:

- I could tell Urban Outifitters took pride in having interns.
- Grabbed meals with senior management.
- The variety of work was interesting: tracked vendor/buyer shipments, put together samples for presentations, learned Urabn Outfitters two different buying tech systems, and worked with production staff.
- Supportive team/boss.
- Events.
- HR worked with me to setup the hours.

Cons:

There isn't a clear transition path from intern to fulltime hire.

Advice for other students:

Get buying and merchandising experience however you can.
