Union Pacific offers a co-op program as well as summer and year-round internships. The UP co-op and internship programs provide college students with meaningful and practical on-the-job experience in a business environment. The time spent allows the student to evaluate UP for future employment. While at Union Pacific, a student receives evaluations based on his or her performance and overall contribution to the organization. These evaluations are one of the tools used for future hiring consideration and, on the operations side, decisions for acceptance into UP’s Operations Management Training Program.
Interns are assigned to a department that will direct the intern’s activities on specific projects and work assignments. UP departments that regularly seek interns include:

- Finance & Accounting
- Information Technology
- Marketing & Sales
CO-OP
Our traditional co-op program hires college students who have a formal arrangement with their academic institution to alternate full-time work and college semesters. The student may alternate between work and study for two or more terms. Students sometimes may receive college credit for participating in these programs. This type of program is primarily offered by our Operating departments: engineering, mechanical and transportation.
Summer and Year-Round Internship
Interns, on the other hand, do not work full-time during the school year. Summer interns work full-time from late May/early June through the end of July. Year-round interns work full-time during this period, but also work part-time during the college semesters.
