Internship Stats
IDEO hires about 15 summer interns. IDEO internship programs include internships in visual interaction design, environmental design, business design, mechanical engineering, and communication design. All IDEO internships are paid.
Highlights
Interns are fully part of cultural life at IDEO, and are included in all company-wide activities. IDEO summer internships begin with a two-week design challenge. This exposes the team to a range of people and spaces at IDEO, and involves presenting a deliverable to your colleagues. In addition, the intern group has casual weekly meetings, goal-setting check-ins, and an exit interview when you leave.*
Internship & IDEO Overview
IDEO brings on dozens of interns from a variety of academic backgrounds throughout the year. They only consider students now in or returning to school. IDEO truly values their interns, who often make real contributions to IDEO’s projects and culture. Many have later become IDEO employees, though there are no guarantees.* Founded in 1991, IDEO is an innovation and design firm that uses a human-centered, design-based approach to help organizations in the business, government, education, healthcare, and social sectors innovate and grow in three ways: (1) Identify new ways to serve and support people by uncovering their latent needs, behaviors, and desires. (2) Visualize new directions for companies and brands and design the offerings - products, services, spaces, media, and software - that bring innovation strategy to life. (3) Enable organizations to change their cultures and build the capabilities required to sustain innovation.*

Pros:
I interned in IDEO’s Zero20 team, formerly their toy design group. As the firm was reorganizing around customer verticals, my research focused on the ‘tween market and went beyond just toys. It was rather unstructured, which allowed me to set the direction for my research. The team has since then been able to integrate my work into client proposals.
Cons:
None that I can think of.
Advice for other students:
Take the freedom that they give you and use it to learn, produce work, and get to know the designers.
