Pros:

- Paid.
- The HR lady worked with me and I basically had very flexible hours. This was a big perk since I was in school fulltime.
- I did learn about how the insurance industry works (big picture).
- My boss was terrific (great guy) and I was given freedom to complete tasks without being micromanaged.
- Tasty lunches.

Cons:

It was difficult to get in a good workflow since I was only at Guardian part-time. Most of the work I did was relatively dull and didn't require any real strategic thinking.

Advice for other students:

I recommend an internship at Guardian, but be more active than I was and get involved in a department that you have passion for.

Pros:

- Guardian trusted me to perform real work that assisted internal stakeholders. This included publishing CPA regulations in certain states to the intranet.
- Helped plan an event forum.
- Loved my boss and she let me work on passion projects that popped up.
- Exposure to different business units.
- Web design and planning.
- Paid.

Cons:

Some work was monotonous, but not too bad.

Advice for other students:

My advice is to get a ton of internships as a student. This will help you figure out what you want to do while building skills/resume.

Pros:

Guardian is a well-known company that gave me hands-on experience during my internship. I worked closely on a health & wellness program and pre-employment screening/logistics.

Cons:

HR can be very paperwork intensive.

Advice for other students:

If you are thinking about a career in Human Resources, make sure to get an HR internship. Your role starting out will probably be pretty compliance driven before you can eventually have a seat at the strategy table.
