Pros:

I spent my summer in the facilities and maintenance department of GE Aviation, in Cincinnati, setting up a call center for Human Resources, coordinating schedules for 100 construction projects, and assisting suppliers and architects with the consolidation of the number of gas tanks on site.

When I heard they were going to put me in Aviation, I thought aerospace and mechanical engineering (‘m an engineering major). But they found somewhere where I could relate with other civil engineers. The best part about being in my department is that I got to sit in all the meetings and see how the electrical, civil and mechanical engineers and the architects and the customers work together and relate to each other to accomplish a task. It was great to see how they feed off of each other.

Cons:

Huge company, so you learn all the different roles and not everyone is engineering.

Advice for other students:

Amazing company and reputation.

Pros:

I learned how to locate resources and think better on my toes while working with forecasting and planning in the processes and solutions department of Aviation. I really benefited from working in a collaborative environment.

I loved the teamwork, getting those e-mails, and being recognized for doing something worthwhile. You’re taking people’s lives into your hands. These are airplanes, not toys. One of GE’s core values is integrity, so they stress that even when nobody is around you need to be doing your job. I had to be on my game in my job because I realized how important even the tiniest details are to the big picture.

Cons:

None, great experience.

Advice for other students:

Visit with the recruiting team if they come to your campus. That is how I landed the internship.

Pros:

- Presentations in front of senior managers were really interesting. Great experience.
- GE on the resume is terrific.

Cons:

Stamford, CT is no New York.

Advice for other students:

Learn excel very well.
Know all the GE businesses and operational units for the interviews. Understand their business.

Pros:

- Free housing.
- Good pay.
- GE emphasizes giving you an entire view of their business which I really enjoyed.

Cons:

- Definitely some mind numbing work. I worked on an internal auditing group and lots of excel.
- If you are really into finance, might be better to get an ibanking summer internship or look into GE Capital.

Advice for other students:

GE is a great brand name, if you can intern with them, do it.

Pros:

- Appreciated the amount of responsibility that GE gives interns. You can tell it's a test for entry level hire evaluation.
- I was in the GE Health division (I've got a little bit of health background) and the group is very talented. Everybody was collaborative and great to work with. Very intelligent.
- Great brand.
- Well organized program with events, mentors, etc.
- The IMLP program is also available as a fulltime entry level program, thus a lot of interns get hired after their senior year to jump start the process.

Cons:

The internship was more technical that I originally thought and the huge amounts of data can get a little boring.

Advice for other students:

GE is a top notch company. Having it on your resume lends immediate credibility.

Pros:

- Good pay.
- Housing stipend.
- I felt like GE (and thus I) were on the front lines of exploring the possibilities of wind power. This was a very exciting feeling.
- It was fun to figure out the way my GE engineering team works. Basically, I helped troubleshoot the turbines. If there was some type of issue/problem the engineers and I would create a fix and relay that to the field team. So, there was lots of teamwork and interesting problem solving.
- The whole team was way too nice to me, I'm thankful.

Cons:

Schenectady is not the most exciting town.

Advice for other students:

As a female engineering student, there are a lot of opportunities, you just have to make sure that your resume can be found.

Pros:

- GE brand.
- Intern events.
- People and the quality of the program.
- The work was interesting. I was assigned a financial planning and analysis project for the supply chain unit. My unit created a monthly cost reporting tool and raw material price indicator.
- Learned hedging strategies for certain raw materials.

Cons:

I was out of my comfort zone and didn't know anything about Grand Rapids.

Advice for other students:

This internship led to a fulltime job offer at GE. My advice is to really focus on your internship search as more companies look to their intern class first before senior year recruitment.

You can only get so deep in an internship.

Advice for other students:

My advice is to dive right in. Embrace the projects GE gives you and run with them.

Pros:

I worked within GE finance - specifically the marketing team in Retail Consumer Finance. My manager and all the co-workers I met were helpful, bright, and driven. My day to day work was market analysis and client positioning analysis. It was open ended and allowed me to really think. I loved it. Also, GE's internship program feeds into their leadership development programs (fulltime positions) upon graduation.

Cons:

n/a

Advice for other students:

If you can get into GE, you need to take it. The GE alumni and brand will open doors for you.

Pros:

I was part of the Human Resources Leadership Program as an intern. I think the best part about the internship was the variety of hr work I was exposed to - I participated in everything from a compensation evaluation tool to the creation of an internal energy jobs portal.

Cons:

Didn't get to deep into any one subject.

Advice for other students:

GE has the top internship program and an incredible employer brand. Good stuff.
