Suntrust Investment Banking Interview
I had a first round interview for a summer investment banking internship. The internship interview was with Suntrust and specifically their investment banking unit based out of Atlanta, GA. The interview happened late morning over the phone. Two guys called me at around 11am. I thought I was ready for the investment banking internship interview, but it turned out that this was not the case!
The first question the Suntrust guys (again, there was two) asked me was: “walk me through your resume.” For some reason, I wasn’t prepped for this internship interview question – I should have been if I had half a brain. So, I fumbled. Badly. I had a copy of my internship resume printed off and I literally just ran through the document. It was brutal.
Then they asked me, “tell me how the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows are tied together.” Again, a simple question that I fumbled with! At this point, I knew the internship interview was basically over. It was only about 15 minutes into the 30 minute investment banking internship interview, but one of the Suntrust guys actually hung up! Yikes!
Needless to say, I didn’t get the investment banking internship. Yes, it stunk, but there were better candidates. At the end of the day, they just went with the students who had the highest GPA. Didn’t make sense, but I guess it is an easy call. Oh well.
My point – be prepared for the investment banking internship interview so that you don’t come off as an idiot like me! Good luck with the internship search!
