Internship with Orlando Magic leads to a career
Kelly Norton Corporate Partnership Account Manager
Kelly is a great example of how an internship can help be the deciding factor for a career path. Read her story about how internships positively affected her career and lead to an awesome job with the Orlando Magic as a Corporate Partnership Account Manager.
If at first you don’t succeed……try again!
While attending the University of Central Florida, she applied for an internship with the Magic, but did not receive a call back because she did not have any experience working in the sports industry at the time.
Kelly decided to focus her efforts around getting more experience and ended up getting an internship with UCF Athletics Department. Her senior year she worked as an intern with the Marketing team in the UCF Athletics Department choosing to focus on football, baseball and Men’s basketball. Kelly quickly confirmed her passion for Sports Marketing and knew that this would soon develop into a career. “Interning at my University gave me more assurance that this was the field I wanted to develop into a career.”
Knowing that she had the experience on her resume it gave her the confidence to re-apply for the Orlando Magic internship program.
“When I applied for the Magic internship the following year, I got an immediate call back and was hired for a season marketing internship position. That said, most departments do encourage a sports background of some kind but not all do and it’s certainly not required.”
We asked Kelly about interning with the Orlando Magic:
“My internship started in August 2005 and by February 2006, I started meeting with representatives from other departments to learn more about what they did. I fell in love with the Corporate Partnerships Business and it just so happened that a position opened up around that time. I worked really hard during my internship here and that paid off because when I applied for the full time position, I had great internal references. We had about 4 people in my internship class that were hired that year. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. It’s really a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Sometimes, internships end and positions open up down the road and previous interns do have the upper hand in the application process. So there is always a chance to be hired at that time as well. The company as a whole does tend to hire within so getting your foot in the door is the first key step.”
In February of 2006, Kelly cut her marketing internship short and accepted a full time position within the Corporate Partnerships department of the Magic, as a Partnership Account Specialist. Kelly spent her first two years in that role fulfilling and executing contracts for Orlando Magic corporate sponsors. In July of 2008, Kelly was one of two Specialists who were promoted to Account Managers and to this day, Kelly manages the Magic’s largest corporate partnership accounts, including their naming rights partner- Amway, Mercedes-Benz, Subway, Walgreens and The Ritz-Carlton Club, to name a few.
The Orlando Magic continues to provide new opportunities for Kelly. In 2009, Kelly’s position was transitioned into a sales role which not only allowed her to continue to manage promotional fulfillment and ROI-driving platforms for her clients, but she is now challenged with renewing each of her corporate partner accounts each year. This has allowed Kelly exposure to conducting sales presentations and has been an extremely rewarding journey as she continues to surpass her sales goals. She also played a significant role in the sponsorship areas within the Orlando Magic’s new home, the Amway Center – scheduled to open in October 2010.
In August of 2009, Kelly’s level of customer service, dedication and community involvement, led her to be named the Orlando Magic’s Employee of the Year.
