As large media companies look to cut back, journalism internships are often in the first round of staff reductions. When you have to cut costs, it’s much easier to eliminate a journalism internship program than to let go of a full time employee. This is brutal news for journalism students as they look to gain experience.

Paul, a Facebook intern is going some great work. I absolutely love the way technology companies structure their internships. Tech companies let their interns work on projects because it’s the best way to evaluate talent – let it go. And you never know that they’ll come up with.
