BlackRock offers paid internships with an emphasis on operations, accounting, finance, economics, and technology students.

BlackRock Internship & Company Overview

BlackRock offers a range of solutions — from rigorous fundamental and quantitative active management approaches aimed at maximizing outperformance to highly efficient indexing strategies designed to gain broad exposure to the world’s capital markets.

Our ten-week Summer Internship Program provides high-potential college students in their penultimate year with a challenging, meaningful and supportive opportunity to learn about finance and asset management while gaining valuable hands-on experience. Limited internship opportunities are available to underclassmen.

Internship program participants attend a one-day orientation which provides a thorough overview of the organization and features prominent speakers, including many of BlackRock’s senior leaders. The program includes a weekly senior speaker series, a team portfolio competition, mentoring, and informal networking activities with BlackRock professionals.

As BlackRock’s internship program is the primary feeder to the Analyst and Associate programs, our goal is to identify qualified students who are interested in becoming full-time BlackRock employees upon graduation.*

Pros:

I interned this summer at BlackRock in San Francisco, and things were busy, to say the least. There was a lot of acquisition in the early to mid-2000s when the company bought tons of properties, and now it’s time to make them perform. Also, with so many banks selling distressed real estate debt, we saw a lot of potential opportunity. I’m really learned the inner workings of valuation, ownership structure and the macroeconomic factors in specific markets.

Cons:

There does feel like there is competition between interns.

Advice for other students:

I was the only real estate MBA intern at all of BlackRock SF, which means I got a lot of exposure to a wide range of things, and I didn’t ruffle the 15 other MBA interns for a full-time offer.

Pros:

In addition to immersing myself in the alternative investments realm this summer, I was able to create and present competitive landscapes for three of BlackRock's hedge funds (the Agriculture Hedge Fund, Enhanced Commodity Fund, and Emerging Markets Debt Hedge Fund). The outlooks provided managers with vital information on how well our funds were positioned in the market relative to our competitors. Such material was not only used for the benefit of my group when it considered how to reposition various strategies, but also for our clients who were interested in generating positive alpha in a tumultuous market.

Along with these long-term projects, I calculated monthly performance analytics for our equity- and fixed-income-based hedge funds, in addition to updating relevant databases. Much of my work was used as a basis for conversation during client meetings -- not to mention global marketing events attended by our account managers.

Cons:

Smart managers and other interns, be ready.

Advice for other students:

One of the most rewarding experiences I had that summer was the "Intern Investment Challenge." This project required groups of interns to manage an equity-based mutual fund using the depth and breadth of BlackRock’s investment platform. At the conclusion of the intern program, we marketed our portfolios to vice presidents and managing directors throughout the firm. Out of 13 investment teams, my group received a third-place award.

Pros:

- I think BlackRock has some of the smartest finance minds on Wall Street.
- Paid.
- Made some great connections.
- Culture felt family like rather than cutthroat.
- Coordinated pre and post settlement of open loan trades in over 30 funds. This was done either through paper or electronic and thefunds were over $15 billion. Learned that side of the business.

Cons:

Some of the loan work is more clerical that strategic.

Advice for other students:

Look into alumni from your college.
