BB&T Internship & Company Overview

BB&T Corporation, headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., is among the nation's top financial-holding companies with $155.1 billion in assets.  Its bank subsidiaries operate 1,800 financial centers in the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, Florida, Alabama, Indiana, Texas and Washington, D.C.  BB&T ranks No. 2 in market share in North Carolina; No. 3 in Virginia and South Carolina; No. 5 in Georgia and Florida; No. 1 in West Virginia; No. 4 in Alabama and Kentucky; No. 6 in Tennessee and Maryland; and No. 7 in Washington, D.C.

BB&T's operating strategy distinguishes it from other financial holding companies. BB&T's banking subsidiaries are organized as a group of community banks, each with a regional president, which allows decisions to be made locally, close to the client. This also makes BB&T's client service more responsive, reliable and empathetic.
At BB&T we are always looking for the next generation of leaders. The Leadership Development Program (LDP) is designed for people with the talent, energy and motivation to excel in a long-term career with BB&T.

BB&T Program History: The Leadership Development Program enjoys a long history dating back to 1964. Graduates of the program continue to hold responsible leadership positions today in various capacities across the organization — many of which are in executive and senior management roles at BB&T. While the program has changed since its inception, one thing remains constant — a commitment to the core values that guide our tradition of excellence.

Pros:

- Insightful orientation and training. You actually really learn a ton about how this stuff works.
- BB&T, because it's based out of Winston, is more laid back that the NYC banks. But, I still think they are just as smart. Kind of like Harris Williams over in Richmond.
- I got a decent amount of exposure to managing directors and most were down to earth.
- I got put on several deals and it was interesting to see the work that investment banks do.

Cons:

BB&T is a regional bank, not nearly the same brand recognition as JP Morgan, Goldman, etc.

Advice for other students:

Take a look at BB&T instead of the NYC banks. I really enjoyed the internship.
