Pros:

- I was given a ton of freedom to perform.
- Alrtia is a great company with a strong sales culture. It's huge.
- After the internship, they made me a fulltime job offer.
- Altria pays people well.
- Sales support.
- I had a territory of about 40 stores that I visited. I was able to conduct a business audit and make recommendations. I really felt like I was helping their business.

Cons:

- This is sales, so if you aren't into sales, don't do it.
- Not a typical internship in the office.

Advice for other students:

I recommend working for Altria.

Pros:

- Office space.
- Culture and intelligence of co-workers.
- Manager.
- Good pay, not just for interns, but positions at Altria are paid well in general.
- Smart engineers.

Cons:

For some people, it's tough to get past the fact that it's a tobacco company.

Advice for other students:

My advice is to get organized with your internship search early. It's easier as an engineering major, but for others it takes time to create the right materials and identify the correct companies.

Pros:

- Given real assignments.
- Altria does a good job assigning brand related projects instead of shadowing and assistant type work.
- Well organized internship program with intern events.
- Very smart and experience brand marketers. I had a great manager.
- Altria lays out career development process and I got the feeling that this is a place you can spend your whole career.
- Cool office. Altria makes a lot of money.

Cons:

Compliance process is intense and slows things down.

Advice for other students:

Get to know the hiring managers and you'll get an offer.

Pros:

I worked in the Altria smokeless tobacco brand management group. As an intern, I was given exciting projects and didn't spend anytime doing busy work. The office and amenities are very cool and Altria sets up intern events. I also had the opportunity to work with Altria's adversiting agency and see the agency/client relationship.

Cons:

The big downside is that you're in the tobacco industry. It's tough.

Advice for other students:

Don't write a crappy internship cover letter that's not specific to the company. Tell a specific company why you are interesting in their company and how you are going to offer value.
