Pros:

I interned with Advance Auto Parts at their Roanoke, VA headquarters this summer. My projects were related to financial decision support. The main responsibility of the department was to assist the core functions of business that make financially just and viable decisions. I was largely working with the supply chain decision support on the strategic initiative of parts availability excellence. My main project brought together data from all the stores owned by the company and the usage of this data to make better decisions.

Cons:

Tough industry - retail and auto.

Advice for other students:

Great company and enjoyed Roanoke, although it's small.

Pros:

- Enjoyed getting a behind the scenes look at how retail stores and supply chains operate.
- Laid back culture and managers that are just fun people.
- I feel like this gives me a lot of hard data to use (and skills) when I go to interview for fulltime jobs.

Cons:

- Tons of numbers.
- Some support functions

Advice for other students:

Don't do operations if you don't like match, etc. Roanoke is a cooler town that you think.

Pros:

- Advanced Auto Parts did a good job of allowing me to see all the different functions of HR. This was incredibly interesting to me as I've taken some HR classes, but hadn't had any real work experience.
- Managers were helpful and included me in any/all meetings that I was interested in.

Cons:

- Support work.

Advice for other students:

Call the HR team and talk with them after you submit your resume/cover letter. Get to know them.
